Wastewater from vehicle service facilities can contain metals such as copper, lead and zinc, as well as organic pollutants from solvents. Wastewater treatment removes approximately 85 to 90 percent of these pollutants but the remainder remains in the effluent that is discharged to the San Francisco Bay. These pollutants are toxic to aquatic life, even in very low concentrations, and they accumulate in the food chain.

DSRSD conducts inspections at vehicle service and wash facilities every other year to verify that they are complying with District Code with respect to prohibited discharges. The inspections ensure proper maintenance of interceptors and sumps and proper disposal of the waste. Inspectors also verify that the businesses are implementing applicable best management practices.Automotive facilities pay a fee for the inspection. Additional fees may apply for follow-up inspections and enforcement actions.

Inspections are intended to be educational for both facility owners and their employees. DSRSD inspectors will discuss the proper ways of handling hazardous waste and other valuable best management practices. Training all employees in these practices protects business owners from costly spills and potential enforcement actions.
