DSRSD Performs Valve Replacements in Dublin and Dougherty Valley

Three contractors lower a valve into a excavation below street level.

Dublin San Ramon Services District is currently repairing and replacing assets part of aging potable water mains such as in-line valves, blow-off valves, and fire hydrant valves throughout the water distribution system in Dublin and San Ramon’s Dougherty Valley. The $3.25 million project is expected to run through June 2022.

In-line valves are critical components of the water distribution system that allow operators to turn segments of pipe on and off. Repairing or replacing in-line valves is essential for system operation and to minimize the impacts of water main shutdowns in the event of a water main break so that the fewest number of customers are impacted.

The District is reviewing opportunities to add in additional valves at tee and cross locations in intersections, which will improve water main shutdown reliability and reduce the number of customers affected by any shutdowns in the future.

DSRSD is also replacing blow-off valves, located at the end of cul-de-sacs, with larger diameter valves to improve water main flushing (scouring water distribution pipes to improve water quality). Increasing the diameter from 2 inches to 4 inches will allow operators to increase water main flushing velocities to improve cleaning.

The District has contracted with West Valley Construction Company and McGuire and Hester to perform the valve replacements, which require temporary water shutoffs during all or part of the hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the day(s) of work. DSRSD staff members hang notices on front doors 24 to 48 hours in advance of water shutoffs for impacted customers.
